∙ Social Security provides benefits to people who are retired, disabled, a dependent of someone who gets Social Security, and a widow, widower, or child of someone who has died. In general, Social Security benefits are based on a person’s earnings averaged over his working lifetime. In order to receive Social Security, a person must have worked and paid into Social Security.
∙ Supplemental Security Income makes monthly payments to people who are 65 or older, blind, or disabled and have low income and few assets. Most people who get SSI can also get food stamps and Medicaid assistance. For information about food stamps and Medicaid, contact the Polk County Department of Family and Children Services.

Medicare is our country’s basic health insurance program for people 65 or older and many people with disabilities. Medicare has two parts – “Part A” which is hospital insurance that helps pay for inpatient hospital care and certain follow-up services, and “Part B” medical insurance that helps pay for doctor’s services, outpatient hospital care, and other medical services. Part A, which is paid for by taxes, is free to eligible persons. Part B is an optional program for which a person has to pay an additional premium. For Medicare beneficiaries with very low income and few assets, the state may provide assistance in paying for health care costs through two programs – Qualified Medicare Beneficiary program and Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary program.
